I have to confess, I was a bit doubtful as to the benefits of the coaching experience before I met Lamiya. In my mind, while I knew I was facing certain professional obstacles, I felt I knew how I should tackle them and so couldn’t really see what more a coach could do – surely I just had to get on and do these things?
The first thing Lamiya did was pull me out of my rather tangled present, helping me get a bigger picture view on what I was trying to achieve and, most vitally, where I was spending my energies.
She helped me break down my different modes of operating, understand the conditions that drive them, and give me ideas as to how to switch gears when facing various obstacles.
As well as setting exercises for me to help put frameworks around my objectives, and then helping me convert these into action plans, Lamiya listened – a lot. It’s very liberating to be able to vent without fear of comeback to a professional coach, and particularly helpful for a lone operator who doesn’t have a team of people to share concerns, wins or frustrations with.
It’s quite rare to find someone who is actually listening to you and solely focusing on you. It’s an incredible support and, because Lamiya’s recall is so impressive (she will remember, months later, things you might have said in a previous meeting) she can also, in her very gentle, collaborative way, call you out on contradictions or proclamations you might have made, making you think harder about what you actually want and what you want to do about it.
Above all, Lamiya is a really inspiring individual. Thoughtful, progressive, considered and kind, spending any time with her is always a joy, and always very enlightening.
